Since coming to Canada in the early 1990s, Khoury has opened five restaurants in the Halifax area. The newest, The Shawarma King, is located on Sackville Drive in Lower Sackville.

“If you serve good food, you get a good relationship with your customer,” said Khoury, who brought his food-making and marketing expertise with him from Syria, along with his entrepreneurial mindset.

After graduation from hospitality school in Damascus in the mid-1980s, he worked as a cook at Meridien Hotel in Latakia, and Sheraton Hotel in Damascus, two of the biggest five-stars hotels in Syria.
